– Photographic Society

The Shire Amateur Photographers’ Society (SAPS) is a great Sutherland Shire based, unified community group of keen amateur photographers, that come together to enjoy their hobby in a relaxed social environment.

Ten  years ago I established the Shire Amateur Photographers’ Society, as a community group, to motivate keen amateur photographers, from in and outside the Sutherland Shire.  We enjoy a variety of activities including Meetings, Photographic Tasks, Presentations, Photographic Outings, Photographic Mystery Tours, and Trips Away.  For example, 63 members went to Africa in four Safaris we organised in 2015.  In total in 2015 we had 61 activities.

My passion has always been photography, like many others, and in establishing the Society, I wanted to establish a photographic group for hobbyists, without underlying competitive or political components.

The Society is unique in relation to other camera groups, in that its underlying aim is to ‘Learn from each other, not compete against each other’.  Meetings often attract 100 keen photographers, both amateur and some professional, from the Shire and beyond, to learn about, experience, and develop a better understanding of their hobby, while providing an opportunity to socialize with other like-minded people.

You can join the Society Flickr group (S.A.P.S.) which is restricted to Society members only. This allows other Society members to view and comment on your latest images.

There is also a Society Facebook group (SAPS) if you wish to share your images not only with others in the Society, but in a more public space.

You only need to participate in what interests you, even if it is only the occasional email to say hi.  There is no commitment to attending every meeting or outing.  Just come when you have the time, or if a topic for the month interests you, or you have a Sunday morning free and our outing destination is of interest.

Membership for a calendar year is $20, it costs $5 to attend a meeting.

Hope to hear from you, or see you at a meeting or outing in the near future.
